Artwork Description

Summer Verdure is a handwoven tapestry from my Colourfield series. This work expands my exploration of woven colourfields by incorporating the classical tapestry technique of the diagonal. The piece reflects on traditions of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European tapestry, while reimagining them in a contemporary context.

The work embodies the idea of bringing the outside in—translating the richness of the landscape into woven form.

Inspiration and Process

Living and working within landscapes drenched in green during spring and summer, I am continually inspired by the abundance of nature during these seasons. This opulence of growth finds its way into my palette and woven surfaces.

My background in costume and embellishment at the renowned costume house Cosprop Ltd, established by John Bright OBE, continues to inform my sensitivity to cloth, structure, and the tactile qualities of materials.

For more than two decades I have worked in the West Sussex landscape, where my practice is deeply connected to natural processes. In my garden dye studio, I create unique colour palettes using specially spun wools, dyed by hand. The fibres absorb colour in an environment illuminated by sea, sky, and filtered light through foliage—anchoring the work in its natural surroundings.
